Day 59 ........sitrep.
Had to literally drag my carcass out of bed very early this morning, which was not an easy task at all. This was because of late finish on day 58 and was combined with the fact that, before getting into bed the previous night I had turned the heating down as it had been set on Chernobyl strength and was causing me to melt rather than sleep.
However.... the temperature dropped to at least -80 through the night (slight exaggeration, but only slight ), and it appeared any part of my body to emerge from under the 18 quilts froze instantly. As is normally the case, this causes any pluming to freeze but in this particular case it was my personal pluming that did the freezing. It was at least midday before my twig and giggle berries thawed out, allowing me to then wee for half an hour non stop!
The cause of the early start was to go on a boat ride along one of the fjords to see glaciers etc. The boat captain was a bit of a suicidal maniac who would drive the boat straight at sheer cliffs, turning at the very last second, then sailing along the cliffs base so close that you could actually reach out and touch the rock. Some may say it was master class in boatman-ship, but personally I feel it was an example of what happens when you smoke to much crystal meths.
The glaciers were superb, truly awe inspiring and beautiful sights; the deep blue colours in the crevasses were mesmerising to look at and the deafening booming of the ice cracking, made you feel like the entire mountain was coming down on top of you.
A great bunch of people on the trip, many of whom had been on the tour the day before. I was sat with 3 Italians, who were all as mad as a box of frogs, and who, despite my complete inability to speak any Italian, (apart from "I surrender"), would waffle at me in full flow and then burst out laughing. At these points I'd laugh too and then say "si, si", then laugh again. However they did not have a bad bone in their body and to be honest, I could not have picked a better bunch to be with.
Also in the group was a mother and 3 daughters from Mexico, a family from Thailand and a multitude of other nationalities, all who added to the excellent dynamic of the trip.
Another brilliant day I will remember till the day I slip off this mortal coil.
