MARKAWASI. Sculpture Garden of the Gods? (Marcahuasi)

Where?

Markawasi is a plateau in the Andean foothills approximately 140 km northeast of Lima, Peru. It is just shy of 13000 feet above sea level and is 3000 ft above the mountain community of San Pedro. The only way to reach San Pedro is by bus, on a journey which takes approximately 3 hours from Lima. These busses travel along dust tracks which have been scratched out of the hillsides and, to gain altitude to San Pedro, the roads contour up the sides of almost vertical cliffs (See Pics). These roads are navigated with great skill by the minibus  drivers, which is a good job as the slightest mistake guarantees a terrifying death for all on board!

The Camel in the Amphitheatre at Markawasi.....Not convinced??  look at the front legs which are shown folded back exactly as a camel sits?? Does the head look like it was naturally part of that rock?? (See the pic below for close up of the head)  Remember this sculpture is dated at 25.000 years old!

The Head of the Camel close up. does that supporting rock look natural? if you think not (and I don't) that means the head was lifted in to place!!

When.

The Dating of Markawasi is difficult as it can be hard to even convince people that the site is what people claim it to be, and as such, modern day archaeologists avoid it. A local scientist from Lima, a Dr Daniel Ruzo, carried out significant study of the plateau in the 1950's (actually living there for almost 9 years), and concluded that the sculpture were from a long forgotten South American Antediluvian civilisation and gave a dating of 25,000 years (Schoch 2005).

What is Markawasi?

The ascent from San Pedro to the Markawasi Plateau.

I came to Markawasi after seeing it briefly mentioned on the very first episode of Ancient Aliens, during which they described a place where many of the rocks had been sculptured to look like human faces or animals, many of which were not native of the South American continent. This suggested that, for the sculptors to have known about such animals or different human characteristic, the history we accept today would had to have been radically different to allow this to happen!?

The final 3000 ft climb from San Pedro to the plateau was achieved on horseback and is a memory I will cherish for the rest of my life.

  The Amphitheatre

The Amphitheatre

On my arrival at the plateau in 2014 we camped in a natural depression called the 'amphitheatre' and I was immediately shown a rock formation called 'The Camel' (see above), which dominates one whole side of the Bowel. Your Initial look at the camel will have you dismissing it instantly, however staring for a little longer reveals that, subtle manipulation of the natural rock, has indeed created a 100ft depiction of a camel.

(note the unnaturally 'placed' rock used to support the camels head. These would had to have been 'lifted' into place?...see pics above)

  The Turtle

The Turtle

Once this subtlety of sculpture has been realised, the true magnificence of Markawasi is revealed in all its glory; this rock garden plateau was not an attempt to create sculptures such as seen on mount Rushmore etc, what has been achieved here and with such amazing creativity, is that, what initially looks like a simple rock outcrop as you approach it, has with some clever deft touches and superb imagination been turned into a huge turtle, elephant, dolphin or human face .

  A cluster of Frogs

A cluster of Frogs

As you wander the plateau these creations are everywhere, to frequent in my opinion to be natural formations. However the sceptics could have a field day because, what is so obviously a giant turtle from one angle becomes just a lump of rock from another, such was the skill of the creators of this magnificent monument.

As I have been researching for this webpage, I have read other peoples accounts of their trips to Markawasi and there seems a uni-formal opinion of similar to my own experience; Below is a passage by a researcher called Bill Coat :-

"What little is written about Marcahuasi indicates a certain reluctance on the part of archaeologists to say that the figures are man-made. Indeed, many of them are subtle and not always obvious to the viewer. But that is precisely what contributes to the mystery. There are so many recognisable forms there, that one is tempted to say they must be man-made, or else nature is having a great joke on us."

The Unavoidable Markawasi Question?

  The Lizards or Iguana's head

The Lizards or Iguana's head

Why are human faces, with such obvious physical characteristics as Arab, Indian and Asian, depicted alongside animals that are not native of this continent, in art considered to be thousands of years old. If we accept current history, these races never had contact with other civilisations, until the middle of the last millennium, but at Markawasi, we see they had all been carved into stone, possibly tens of thousands of years ago????

  The Sphinx

The Sphinx

Not everyone will agree with what I have written here, and trust me, I've not scratched the surface of what is at, and what happens at Markawasi; Yet, if it is put with other evidence, that is not quite common knowledge, but there for all to see if they choose, it adds substance to the theory that  "The history of the human race, that we currently accept, may actually be completely wrong & we are not the first advanced civilisation to have flourished on this planet"
